Barry Walter was appointed Director of the VFW Service Office, Department of Illinois VFW on June 15, 2009.

A Vietnam US Army veteran Barry has been a member of the VFW since October 1967. He served on active duty in the US Army from July 1966 to February 1974 and in the Army Reserves until July 1976. He served in Vietnam from August 1967 to July 1971 with the 4th Infantry Division in a variety of field and headquarters assignments for three years and one year with IFFV as an artillery advisor and liaison.

As a member of the VFW Barry served as Post 4005, Corunna, MI Commander 1975-76 and 1980-81 earning All State Honors. He also served as Shiawassee County Council Commander 1981-82 and Michigan District 9 Commander 2005-06. He has also served as District VOD and Patriot Pen Chairman for 33 years, Department VOD Chairman for 9 years, Department Membership Chairman, Department All State Chairman, Editor of the Department newspaper for 5 years, Department Chief of Staff and Department Adjutant/Quartermaster for 3 years.

Barry was employed by the Department of Michigan Service Office as an Assistant State Service Officer from 1981 to 1995 and from 1999 to 2001. He served as Department Adj/Qm from 1995 to 1998. He was employed at the VFW National Home for Children as the Public Relations Director from 2001 to 2007.

He is married to Pam. They have two sons and three granddaughters. They now live in Hyde Park, Il and belong to VFW Post 5220.



The VFW Department Service Office is co-located with the VA Regional Office in Chicago. Your VFW Service Office staff is prepared to assist you with the preparation of your claim for VA benefits. The VFW Service Office works together with field offices of the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs and Veterans Assistance Commissions throughout the State and VFW Post Service Officers to provide assistance and advice to veterans and their families.

    The four Illinois Veteran's Homes are owned by the State of Illinois and operated by the State Department of Veterans Affairs. The VFW does not operate nor do we have any responsibility for admissions policies of the homes.     Each Illinois Veterans' Home is fully staffed with caring and dedicated professionals to provide quality long-term care and services to each resident member. Volunteers from local community and Veterans' Organizations provide many additional supporting services and activities.

    Each home is certified by, and works closely with, its U.S. Department of Veterans' Affairs Medical Center of jurisdiction and the local healthcare community to assure that each resident's care meets applicable standards as well as individual expectations. Emphasis is given to assuring that each resident member is both well cared for and has a full and complete quality of life.
